Breast augmentation is the most common cosmetic surgery procedure performed in the United States. A 2017 report by the American Society of Plastic Surgeons states that almost 20 percent of the 1.8 million cosmetic procedures performed in 2016 were breast augmentation surgeries. However, as safe as breast augmentation is, it is not free from complications. Many patients who have implants will need revision surgery sometime in the 10 years following their initial procedure.

Some reasons that women may consider breast revision surgery include a desire to change the size of their implants, improper placement of the implants, or capsular contracture. Capsular contracture is the most common complication that can occur after breast augmentation, which is where the scar tissue that develops around the implant constricts and squeezes the implant. One of the most visible problems, though, is rippling, where the edges of the implant are visible through the skin. This can happen for multiple reasons including not having much tissue between the skin and implants and poor technique by the surgeon. These can all be difficult situations to remedy, but there is a solution! Breast revision with stem cell fat grafting can be highly effective in difficult cases where rippling is present.

How Does the Procedure Work?

Fat is extracted from your body using a liposuction procedure; a cannula is inserted into small incisions to extract fat from your body. Common sites for extraction include the stomach, thighs, and waist. Then, the stem cells are separated from the fat using an enzymatic process. Once fully separated, the stem cells are mixed back with fat in order to provide a higher concentration of stem cells than what would typically be found in a standard fat graft. This stem cell fat graft is then injected into your breast tissue to smooth out any rippling or indentations.

Why to Consider Stem Cell Fat Grafting

There are many benefits to a fat grafting procedure. It allows you to remove fat from an area of your body where you would prefer to be slimmer. Since it’s from your own body, chances of allergic reactions and rejection are much lower. Standard fat grafting can be unpredictable; sometimes, a portion of the injected fat is absorbed by the body, creating a need for multiple treatments. However, studies out of Japan indicate the use of stem cell fat grafts provides higher retention of fat within the breast, meaning your results will last longer. They also show that stem cell fat grafting has a prolonged survival rate, making your need for multiple treatments less likely.
